2022 Kia EV6 Starts At $44,995 In Canada, Qualifies For Federal Zero-Emission Vehicle Rebate And PEI Universal EV Incentive

Priced from $44,995 for the standard range rear-wheel-drive model, the 2022 Kia EV6 will qualify for the $5,000 Federal Zero-Emission Vehicle rebate and the $5,000 PEI Universal EV Incentive when it goes on sale in March 2022.

Initially, there will be five different versions of the EV6 available. The first three models – RWD Standard Range, RWD Long Range, and AWD Long Range – fall into the price brackets for rebate eligibility, creating a total of $10,000 in instant savings plus a Level 2 home charger provided by the Government of Prince Edward Island. There are two more long range all-wheel-drive models (GT-Line Package 1 and GT-Line Package 2), along with an EV6 GT due later in the year with 576 horsepower.

(* As of March 2023, the free home charger program has been suspended by the PEI government, but the rebate has grown by $750 to $5,750 with an additional $750 provided in lieu of a home charger or charging costs.)

This isn't the first time we've discussed the EV6 or Kia's EVs in general. You can read about the EV6's blisteringly fast charge times here, check out the EV9 Concept here, and get to know more about the EV6's unveiling here. This is an extremely high-techa and high-performance vehicle, and there's a lot of material we could cover. For now, let's focus on five components. What are the different EV6s you can buy? What is an EV6's range? How do you charge an EV6? How much does the 2022 Kia EV6 cost in Canada? How do the rebates work?

2022 KIA EV6 MODELS

With standard equipment including a 12.3-inch centre screen with navigation, Kia's Connect Intelligence Car Services, and lane keeping assist, the 2022 Kia EV6 lineup kicks off in Canada with a rear-wheel-drive model called the Standard Range. The EV6 Standard Range uses a 58.0 kWh battery and a 125kW rear motor. Call it 167 horsepower.

Next up is the Long Range version of the same car, with wireless charging, Safe Exist Assist, and an innovative onboard heat pump designed to enhance range in cold Canadian climates. The Long Range EV6 ups the battery to a 77.4 kWh unit with a 168kW rear motor, or 225 horsepower.

There are currently three other Long Range models in the EV6 lineup, but these three utilize all-wheel drive. Underneath the skin is a 77.4 kWh battery, a 74kW front motor and a 165kW rear motor. Combined horsepower is a soul-stirring 320. The GT-Line adds leather seating, ambient moddel lighting, and a surround view monitor. The upgraded GT-Line includes augmented reality heads-up display, V2L (vehicle-to-load so you can use the EV6 to power externally at, for example, a camp site) and a sunroof.

Unfortunately, the two GT-Line models and upcoming GT won't qualify for the EV rebates, at least not unless eligibility requirements are updated.

EV6 RANGE

There are currently three range variations in the EV6 lineup: 373 kilometres for the RWD Standard Range, a bladder-busting 499 kilometres for the RWD Long Range, and 441 kilometres for the three all-wheel-drive models.

What does 499 kilometres look like? It's enough for four round trips between Summerside and Charlottetown. Even at 441 kilometres, the all-wheel-drive 2022 Kia EV6 could travel from Summerside to the U.S. border at Calais, Maine.

EV6 CHARGING

Range is only one component in the EV6, which is set to be one of – if not the – fastest-charging electric vehicles on the market.

  • At a full Level 3 fast charger running 800V, the EV6 can generate an 80% charge in just 18 minutes.
  • At Level 2 recharging, which can be done at home, the EV6 can run from 10% to 100% charge in roughly 7 hours for the larger 77.4 kWh versions.
  • V2L technology doesn't just mean you can charge up personal electronics or appliances – the EV6 can even provide a measure of power to another EV that's low on battery.

EV6 PRICING

Although availability is limited, the EV6 is shockingly more affordable than expected. In fact, one way to see just how affordable the EV6 is in Canada is to look at U.S. pricing, which starts at a Canadian dollar equivalent of $51,800, way past where the EV6 is actually priced.

  • Kia EV6 RWD Standard Range: $44,995
  • Kia EV6 RWD Long Range: $52,995
  • Kia EV6 AWD Long Range: $54,995
  • Kia EV6 AWD Long Range GT-Line Package 1: $57,995
  • Kia EV6 AWD Long Range GT-Line Package 2: $61,995

HOW DO THE REBATES WORK?

The price on the sticker and the price you'll pay, however, are two very different numbers altogether. In Prince Edward Island, electric vehicle incentives are among the best in the continent thanks to the fact that rebates from the federal and provincial governments can be stacked on top of one another. The rebates aren't tied to income taxes; they're applied by the dealer and all paperwork is handled by the dealer. PEI's Universal EV Incentive even adds a free Level 2 home charger so you can leave the driveway every morning with a full charge and skip past every public charger (and gas station.)

Both the federal $5,000 Zero-Emission Vehicle rebate and the $5,000 PEI Universal EV Incentive are applied after tax directly against the purchase or lease of the vehicle. That's right, you can apply the rebate even if you choose to lease the 2022 Kia EV6: $5,000 for a 48-month lease, $3,750 for a 36-month lease, $2,500 for a 24-month lease, and $1,250 for a 12-month lease.

Eligible vehicles must have a manufacturer's suggested retail price under $45,000. But in addition to vehicles priced under $45,000, both the federal and provincial rebates also apply to vehicles in the same model lineup that are priced under $55,000.

* As of March 2023, eligilibility and rebate programs have been upgraded. The PEI Universal EV Incentive no longer includes the level 2 home charger but has been upgraded by $750 in lieu of a home charger installation or charging costs. Meanwhile, on leases, that means the dollar values have grown to $5,750 (48-month lease), $4,312 (36-month lease), $2,875 (24-month lease), and $1,437 (12-month lease).

Eligible vehicles now includes passenger cars with MSRPs under $55,000 – not $45,000 as before – and trim variants of those vehicles priced up to $65,000 as well as SUVs under $60,000 and trim variants of those vehicles priced up to $70,000. This means the 2023 Kia EV6 RWD Standard Range, 2023 Kia EV6 RWD Long Range, and 2023 Kia EV6 AWD Long Range are all eligible.
